Head of Competence Center Compounds & Recyclates (m/f/d)

Reporting to our “Director Science & Engineering”, you are going to contribute to this journey by being responsible for a team with more than 40 managers, experts, scientists, engineers and technicians that work in the areas of Compounds & Recyclates research and in Pilot Compounding across two locations.

You will:

  • Play an active role in enabling technology leadership by driving the continuous development of a competence based organisation, enabling the maximum innovation delivery for compound development;
  • Maximise the output of projects, particularly in agile compound development with both recyclates and virgin polymers, by making sure that all team members are effectively assigned, so that contributions and results are in line with customer- and business needs and at a high scientific level
  • Lead the department by acting as coach and by creating the scientific and operational environment where employees can develop to their fullest potential according to Borealis safety standards and values
  • Be responsible for budget and business planning, investment planning, HR strategy including succession planning, performance management and people development
  • Lead the regular update of the long term competence centre strategy and be responsible for its implementation
  • Closely align with other competence centers within Science & Engineering, Asset Development and our recycling plants as well as with innovation projects and portfolio managers 
  • Develop and maintain knowledge in these competence fields including understanding of technology trends, patent strategies and competitor analysis
  • Drive highest HSE and Q standards and performance and lead the team to working safely by creating awareness and commitment for safety

About you


We are looking for a seasoned technical professional and expert in the area of compounding and a strong interest in polymer recyclates and Circular Economy as a whole. You hold a Master’s (potentially also PhD) degree in polymer or chemical engineering, chemistry or similar. You need to have 10+ years of experience in an R&D environment. As a manager you have already in the past proven that you are able to lead a diverse team of managers and high level technical experts in a matrix structure.

You are known to be a sound decision maker, someone who likes to challenge the status quo and who has an excellent intercultural understanding. You are a conceptual thinker with an eye for the global view and details at the same time. Overall, you are a trustworthy person, leader and partner for your team as well as internal and external stakeholders and customers.

Following Austrian law regulations, we offer, reflecting your experiences, skills and competencies, competitive compensation based on the collective labour agreement chemical industry starting at EUR 69.735,96 annual gross salary (based on 38 hrs/week) and are willing to pay more based on your experience and background.
